Navigating the Oklahoma Open Records Act

As the Oklahoma Constitution recognizes and guarantees, all political power is inherent in the people. Thus, it is the public policy of the State of Oklahoma that the people are vested with the inherent right to know and be fully informed about their government, and citizens have a right to access government data beyond that which can be found on Oklahoma Checkbook.

The Oklahoma Open Records Act is a series of laws designed to guarantee the public has access to public records of governmental bodies, and the purpose of the Oklahoma Open Records Act is to ensure and facilitate the public's right of access to and review of those records.

According to the act, anyone may request public records and no statement of purpose is required. However, reasonable fees may be charged for document collection. Section 24A.5 of the act provides more information regarding open and confidential records, and states that certain requests may incur a fee to recover the direct cost of record search and copying.

There is no restriction on the use of records and the law does not specify a time limit for responses to requests.
